STATEMENT OF ISSUE: A request from the Okaloosa Island Hospitality Group has been
received requesting approval to discharge fireworks from the Okaloosa Island Fishing Pier.
BACKGROUND: County Ordinance #13-07 (regulation of county recreational areas, including
parks and beaches) addresses Special Events at county parks, beaches or recreational areas
within Okaloosa County. Discharging of fireworks “in any County park or any other County
owned or leased property unless approval has been granted by the Board of County
Commissioners”.
A request from the Okaloosa Island Hospitality Association has been received to discharge
fireworks from the Okaloosa Island Fishing Pier on a weekly basis according to the provided
schedule. The initial request for a permit was heard at the April 19th Board of County
Commission meeting but failed to gain approval due the lack of information. The Hospitality
Group made a follow up presentation to the Board of County Commissioners at the May 3rd
commission meeting presenting additional information.
Staff has reviewed the information and is confident that all outstanding issues have been
resolved.
This request has been reviewed and approved by Public Safety, Beach Safety, the Sheriff's
Office, the Okaloosa Island Fire Department and the leaseholder at the Pier. In addition, the
Okaloosa Island Fire District has issued a fireworks permit for the event. Permit fees are based
on approximately 100 to 499 people which are expected to view the fireworks show in the direct
viewing area.
OPTIONS: Approve / Disapprove the request for a special event permit to discharge fireworks
from the Okaloosa Island Pier.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Request Board approval to allow discharge of fireworks weekly,
based on schedule provided, from the Okaloosa Island Pier, as requested by the Okaloosa Island
Hospitality Association.
