BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS AGENDA REQUEST DATE: July 6, 2016 TO: Honorable Chairman and Members of the Board FROM: Don Vanderhoek SUBJECT: Holt Industrial Park Telecommunications DEPARTMENT: Information Technology BCC DISTRICT: All STATEMENT OF ISSUE: The Board is requested to approve a plan to install a conduit system comprised of multiple conduits and associated underground pull boxes within the Holt Industrial Park area (see attached area map). This conduit system will provide a common demarcation and conduit pathway for telecommunication service providers. The NTE amount for this effort will be $35,000.00. BACKGROUND: Okaloosa County would like to encourage growth and diversification at the Holt Industrial Park by facilitating the availability of business friendly, competitive and robust telecommunication related services. The retention and expansion of industry at the park in large part hinges on the ability of each tenant to fully access the global economy via broadband internet and other related distributed network services. Typically these services have been limited and expensive due to the rural nature of the area and the resulting small tenant base at the park. This precludes many service providers from expending the capital necessary to build out to tenants in the park. A County provided common demarcation and conduit system from Interstate 10 to within the park will remove the main construction expense for the last 4,000 LF and provide the incentive necessary for service providers to reach the park for those who already have a presence within range of Interstate 10. Okaloosa County is confident that among other factors, increased competition, level of service and sustainability as it applies to telecommunication related services will help make the Holt industrial Park more appealing and industry friendly. OPTIONS: Approve/Disapprove RECOMMENDATIONS: Approve and authorize the Department of Information Technology to complete this project using existing county telecommunications related maintenance contract(s).
