SUBJECT: Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance Permission Request for Project at
Longwood Park
DEPARTMENT: Public Works

STATEMENT OF ISSUE: Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance is again requesting permission to
access the County property of Longwood Park to plant grasses along the shoreline utilizing 5th
grades from Longwood and Kenwood elementary schools on May 21st, 27th, and 29th , 2015.
BACKGROUND: Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance would like to continue working with
Okaloosa County to carry on a student-led restoration project that will result in placement of
emergent vegetation along the shoreline of Longwood Park, extending south of the boat ramp to
the southern park parcel boundary. The proposed habitat enhancements will increase intertidal
habitat and protect the shoreline from erosion. The project will provide for community education
and participation through volunteer events, namely ‘Grasses in Classes’ field trips consisting of
5th graders from Longwood and Kenwood elementary schools. This is a continuation of the same
project that was approved by the Board on May 6, 2014.
Jason Purdy, Environmental Specialist with the Submerged Lands & Environmental Resources
Program FL Dept. Of Environmental Protection, provided an email of April 22, 2015, explaining
no additional permit is required to continue the grass planting project.
Choctawhatchee Basing Alliance has provided all required documentation and insurance. Based
on the letter from Mr. Purdy of FDEP, no further action or executed documents from the Board
of County Commissioners is required for state permitting.
OPTIONS: Approve/Disapprove.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Request Board approval to allow Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance
staff and 5th grade students from Longwood and Kenwood elementary schools access to
Longwood Park to plant grasses for restoration along the shoreline.
