to helping abused and
neglected animals receive Shelter, Safety, and Second Chances is appreciated by all of us who
care for them.
Thanks to donors like you, Alaqua Animal Refuge has provided a safe haven for over 8,000
animals since its inception just five short years ago. This year’s accomplishments also include
representing the state of Florida on Capital Hill to lobby for more humane animal welfare laws,
partnering with the Florida Sheriff's Association and the State Attorney’s offices to bring our
animal cruelty investigation and prosecution seminars state wide, and developing a program to
utilize prison labor to train rescued canines as therapy dogs for families who can not afford
them.
We are a small organization without the resources available to large, national humane groups.
Yet, we have grown to be a nationally recognized rescue, and we are called upon daily to locally
provide support in the Southeast United States where the national organizations don’t reach.
Your continued support of Alaqua is vital to the health and wellbeing of our entire organization.
i'm asking for your continued support that gives so many animals, and humans alike, a second
chance.
We invite you to take a tour of our campus and meet some of the 250 animais who are currently
in residence. We are always proud to show off our facility and have our supporters meet the
animals we care for with the help of your generosity.
| am always available to answer any questions you may have. Don’t hesitate to call me at

About Alaqua Animal Refuge: Alaqua Animal Refuge - an independent, 501c3
nonprofit organization located on Florida’s Emerald Coast ~ advocates the general
welfare and humane treatment of animals by providing shelter, prevention of pet
overpopulation and adoption services. Located on 10 acres in Freeport, Florida, the
refuge was formed by Florida resident Laurie Hood in 2007 when she discovered that
countless animals were being euthanized due to the flack of a no-kill shelter/adoption
organization in the area. Since that time, Alaqua Animal Refuge has helped find homes
for more than 8,000 animals, serves as a true refuge for more than 250 animals at any
given time, and has become a recognized national leader in animal welfare issues.

Average intake and adoption: More than 250 animals can be found at the refuge at
any given time. intake numbers are based on adoption numbers, and up to 100
animals are adopted each month. The refuge is at full capacity 100% of the time.
Types of animals rescued: Any domestic animal in need, including dogs, cats, horses,
farm animals, rabbits, turtles, goats, geese and even emus. From purebreds to special-
needs, these animals have all found safety and shelter at Alaqua until they find a
permanent home.
Adopotion process and fees: Prospective adopters must complete an application and
go through an approval process. Fees for dogs are $150 and puppies are $175; cats
are free of charge (with approved application) and kittens are $125. All adoptions
include age-appropriate vaccinations and health care, as well as spaying and
neutering. Equine and farm animals pricing depends on the animal.
Spay and Neuter Program: One of Alaqua’s most important programs, which
includes S.N.A.P. (Spay Neuter Assistance Program), Spay and Stay (feral cat
management), and in-house sterilization. Approximately 2,000 dogs and cats are
spayed and neutered each year with this program, providing a solution to the area’s
animal overpopulation issue.
The Unconditional Love Project: Alaqua’s newest program has partnered with
Bay County Correctional and supervised inmates are training our rescue dogs to be
therapy dogs. These canines are given free of charge to handlers and/or organizations
where they are needed.
Alaqua Unleashed Dog Park: One of the refuge’s goals is to keep pets happy
and healthy in the home, and exercise, training, and socialization is key. Soin 2011, a
partnership with Walton County was created, and the refuge became the new operators
of Alaqua Unleashed in Santa Rosa Beach on 18 acres of county owned land. The park
currently offers a small and large dog off-leash area and agility/obedience training
classes. Future plans include a landscaped and sheltered seating area; sections for
large, small and senior/handicapped dogs; restrooms; a hiking area and a water
feature. As well, long-term plans also call for the park to include a concert area and
more for community events.
AARK (Alaqua Animal Refuge Kids): Through this program and during fieid
trips to our "facility, children learn compassion and respect for life by caring for

Dear Sheriff Ashley,
Thank you for your continued support of community mental health issues and
services in Okaloosa County. From crisis intervention training to Baker Act and
beyond, your office has worked to keep our community safe.
As you may be aware, State funding reductions have closed Okaloosa mental
health group homes while uninsured adults in need of psychiatric appointments are
being turned away due to the same funding decisions.
Decreases in mental health treatment and shelters frequently leads to an increase
of law enforcement involvement with mental health crises.
The Mental Health Association works to assist our community residents by
purchasing emergency psychiatric medication for persons in need. Our program helps
individuals remain psychiatrically stable, lowers jail and hospital recidivism rates,
while reducing law enforcement crises responses.
The Mental Health Association is requesting five thousand dollars from the
Okaloosa County State Forfeiture Program to keep our community a safe place for all.
Thank you,
(ogee
