Public Content Okaloosa UP is a proud endeavor of Okaloosa Technical College and The Okaloosa County School District. The Okaloosa County School District is committed to providing pathways to post-secondary education for all students. The firm belief is that it is especially important to address the need for postsecondary comprehensive programs for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Okaloosa Up will be a collaborative partnership between the school district, Okaloosa Technical College and community partners (Vocational Rehabilitation, CareerSource, and local industry employers). This collaborative effort will provide inclusive post‐secondary technical education in state approved career certificate programs for persons with intellectual disabilities. The program will provide direct support for students with trained personnel to assist with the myriad of skills necessary to establish gainful and sustainable employment. Such skills will include (but not limited to): social skills, technical skills, interpersonal communication, and problem-solving skills. In addition, students will receive additional assistance for skills specifically related to their program of study. To ensure student success, students will have access to support structures designed to help the student meet his/her goals. Students will have access to the Okaloosa UP Program Coordinator as well as Student Services Staff, VR case manager, and/or relevant community support agency personnel through advisory committees. Students will create unique student success plans alongside the dedicated staff members for Okaloosa UP. Okaloosa UP, as its main objective, will provide career pathways to students with intellectual disabilities in one of two areas that aligns with the student’s particular field of interest. The ultimate goal will be that 100% of students accepted to Okaloosa UP will be able to secure gainful employment in their related industry. Okaloosa UP is an opportunity for aspiring Unique Professionals to gain the skills, abilities, and training to move them from their desires for success to gainful professional employment. Two specific programs are available to these students: Professional Culinary Arts and Hospitality or Building Trades and Construction Design Technology. Students will be placed with a Transition Student Mentor (TSM) and a Transitional Trainer Professional (TTP) while working in the labs and at job training sites. Okaloosa UP students will complete their program over a two-year period to earn an Okaloosa UP certification as well as any industry certifications students are able to complete alongside their non-disabled peers (i.e., ServSafe, OSHA 10, etc.). Additionally, two third- year options will be offered to completers of Okaloosa UP: 1) Apprenticeship certification guiding students into an actual hired position in the local community; and 2) Enter their prospective CTE program as a beginning student having earned hours towards completion of either Culinary or Building Trades. The pacing of these courses outlined below allows students to complete what their non-disabled peers would complete in a year (building trades) or year and a half (Culinary Arts) as well as a comprehensive internship to transition them successfully into employment. Supportive coursework in employability skills, as well as supervised internships will be utilized to increase opportunity for employment after becoming a completer of either the two or the three-year program. (*Note - Completers of Okaloosa UP, would be eligible to enroll in their respective CTE area as a beginning student in that program, and transferable hours would be considered at the discretion of the instructor and college directors.) The primary use of grant funds will be to originate the staffing pattern that will be used to support the specific and unique needs of these Okaloosa UP students. Staff hired through this funding will directly instruct, train, and job shadow students to provide for the success in the program and in their transition to employment upon completing. Grant funding requests are also stipulated for support of additional hours beyond contracted time for staff to prepare the learning environment and support the selection of students from amongst the applications received. Finally, some funding is requested for basic travel needs for professional development and for supplies or materials.
