BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS AGENDA REQUEST DATE: March 15, 2016 TO: Honorable Chairman and Members of the Board FROM: Jason Autrey SUBJECT: Public Event Permit - Destin Marathon DEPARTMENT: Public Works BCC DISTRICT: 2&5 STATEMENT OF ISSUE: Zane Holscher with The Destin Beach 50 Beach Ultra has requested a Public Event Permit to have a marathon run from Harborwalk Village in Destin to the west end of Santa Rosa Blvd and back for a fundraising run event. BACKGROUND: The event is to start from Harborwalk Village and proceed west on the eastbound lane of U.S. Hwy 98, turning south on Santa Rosa Blvd. to a turn around point near the end and return. They are requesting a closure of the eastbound lane of U.S. Hwy 98. The event would take place Saturday, April 17th between the hours of 6:00 A.M. and 12:00 P.M. Estimated attendance is 1,200 to 1,500 runners. This request has been reviewed by Public Works, Public Safety, the Sheriff's Office, the Okaloosa Island Fire Department and the Destin Fire Department. The Fire Department requests all volunteers that are roadside to wear high visibility vests. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) requires approval by the local government agency for their permit. The Destin City Council will review this item on their March 7, 2016 agenda. OPTIONS: Approve / Disapprove the request for a Public Event Permit to have a marathon fund raising run event on US Hwy 98 and Santa Rosa Blvd. as submitted by The Destin 50 Beach Ultra. RECOMMENDATIONS: Approve the request for a Public Event Permit to have a marathon fund raising run event on US Hwy 98 and Santa Rosa Blvd. as submitted by The Destin 50 Beach Ultra contingent upon approval by the Florida Department of Transportation.
