Southside
Primary School.
Public Content
If Southside Primary School is awarded the McWane Foundation Grant, the school would use the funds
to purchase and install awnings over three playground areas located at our school campus.
The goal of the shading/awning would be to provide relief from the Florida sun during Spring, Summer,
and Fall months for PreK-D, VPK, and Primary Elementary students. Shading would change the
student’s thermal comfort from hot to warm, decreasing exposure from direct sunlight. Shading can
actually make the temperature feel 10 to 15 degrees cooler. Several students in PreK-D have physical
disabilities. Where every child needs outdoor physical stimulation, PreK-D students (specifically) do not
need to have extreme sun exposure or risk the chance of heat exhaustion. Shading would allow them
the opportunities to practice gross motor activities, and stay guarded from the Florida sunrays. The
estimated cost is $24,250 but we are submitting the grant for $30,000 to cover any unforeseen cost.
Any leftover funds would be used to purchase additional awnings throughout the school.
Our expectation of the McWane Foundation Grant , once submitted and approved, is to complete the
project during the summer of 2017. As soon as the grant funds are available, the principal, Mrs. Haan,
will contact Chris Burchfield (owner of We Can Shade It) and schedule the installation. He informed us
the process would take no more than two weeks to complete. We anticipate the awnings to be ready
before the beginning of the 2017-2018 school year.
The grant application has been reviewed and approved by Ms. Scallan and Mr. McInnis.

Kindergarten Report Card for
2017-2018.
Public Content
Rather than a typical report card, Okaloosa County Kindergarten teachers use an age-appropriate
comprehensive reporting system. The system includes a quarterly assessment checklist that is fully
aligned to the Florida State Standards. In addition to the quarterly checklists, the system includes a
Teacher Guide providing explicit directions for administering each assessment element, a Parent Guide,
a mid-quarter parent progress report, and an appendix. The appendix, which was developed by a
group of Kindergarten teachers, includes all resources required to administer the assessment system.
Prior to the end of the 2017 school year, all Kindergarten teachers were provided the opportunity to
submit feedback concerning both the Kindergarten Report Card and Curriculum Guides. Initial revisions
were then made to the report card based on teacher feedback. A group of Kindergarten teachers
received the initial revisions via email. This group then met and collaborated with District Instructional
Coaches on to provide additional feedback and approve the final revisions. The assessment system is
completed online; MIS has developed a program that calculates each individual skill score once the
teacher has entered the raw score. A Kindergarten representative per school is trained to serve as a
resource in communicating the annual revisions. Upon approval by the School Board, the Parent Guide
will be available on the OCSD website.
