SUBJECT: Request to schedule a Public Hearing to allow golf carts on 1st Avenue
and portions of 8th Street

STATEMENT OF ISSUE: Mr. Harry Radford has requested the allowance of golf carts on the
full length of 1st Avenue and on 8th Street between 1st Avenue and Meigs Drive in the Shalimar
area.
BACKGROUND: In 2014, the Board of County Commissioners held a public hearing and
approved the use of golf carts on various county County roads in the unincorporated Shalimar
area. Public Works has not received any complaints concerning golf cart use on these roadways.
A citizen has requested golf carts also be allowed on all of 1st Avenue and the portion of 8th
Street between 1st Avenue and Meigs Drive as shown on the attached map. Mr. Radford has
approached neighbors on 8th Street, between 1st Avenue and Meigs Drive, to ensure there are no
objections from residents; as 8th Street was specifically excluded for golf carts in the 2014
ordinance.
Staff has reviewed the request and has no objection to allowing golf carts on these two low
volume, low speed road segments.
OPTIONS: Approve/Disapprove scheduling a Public Hearing for August 16, 2016 to consider
the amendment to section 21-60.1 to allow golf carts on 1st Avenue and portions of 8th Street in
the unincorporated Shalimar area.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Approve the scheduling a Public Hearing for August 16, 2016 to
consider the amendment to section 21-60.1 to allow golf carts on 1st Avenue and portions of 8th
Street in the unincorporated Shalimar at 6:30 pm or shortly thereafter.
