BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS AGENDA REQUEST DATE: June 16, 2015 TO: Honorable Chairman and Members of the Board FROM: Elliot Kampert SUBJECT: Setting a Public Hearing to Adopt Current Building and Electrical Codes DEPARTMENT: Growth Management BCC DISTRICT: All STATEMENT OF ISSUE: Staff requests that the Board set a public hearing for 6:30 PM or soon thereafter on July 7, 2015 to adopt an ordinance amending Chapter 6 of the County Code to reflect the State's approval of the 2012 Building Code and the 2011 National Electrical Code. BACKGROUND: Through Chapter 553 of the Florida Statutes, the Florida Legislature has created a single, unified building code (“The Florida Building Code”) to be applied uniformly throughout the state by all local enforcement agencies. As a local enforcement agency, Okaloosa County is tasked with enforcing the most current versions of the Code. To facilitate implementation, local enforcement agencies must adopt jurisdiction-specific administrative chapters (designated Chapter 1, Administration) to govern how the code will be interpreted and applied throughout the jurisdiction. The 2012 Florida Building Code took effect on July 1, 2015 and must now be adopted by all jurisdictional permitting agencies. In addition, the County currently enforces the 2005 Electrical Code; this must be updated to the most current version, as well. OPTIONS: The Board may set the public hearing for 6:30 PM on July 7, 2015 or it may set it for another date and time. RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the Board of County Commissioners set a public hearing for 6:30 PM or soon thereafter on July 7, 2015 to consider and adopt an ordinance amending Chapter 6 of the County Code to reflect the most current building and electrical codes.
