April 29, 2014
Chairman, Board of County Commissioners
SUBJECT: May 6, 2014 BCC Agenda Request
USDOI Bulletproof Vest Partnership Grant
BACKGROUND: Request the Okaloosa County Board of Commissioners approve the
Okaloosa County Clerk of Courts (on behalf of the Sheriff's Office) to apply for the
Department of Justice 2014 Bulletproof Vest Partnership Grant. The grant will
potentially fund up to 50-percent of the cost of ballistic protective vests for deputy
sheriffs. These vests are purchased both for new hires and to replace vests that are
damaged or have reached their 5-year shelf life.
The Sheriff's Office will request funding to purchase 100 vests next year, at a total cost
of $57,480. The federal amount requested would be 50-percent, or $28,740. The actual
amount of the award will not be known until after the application is submitted and the
Department of Justice assigns an allocated amount based on federal appropriations.
RECOMMENDATION: Request the Board of County Commissioners authorize the
Chairman to sign, review and approve the application submission, accept the award, and
all future grant documents during the term of the grant. Request the Board authorize the
Contracts & Grants office to submit the on-line application and on-line submission of
future grant documents during the term of the grant.
Thank you for your consideration.
