HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF
FORT WALTON BEACH
The City of Fort Walton Beach exciting and
has had an
romantic history. From legends swashbuckling pirates to
of
sunken treasure, from Indian chiefs to renegade outlaws, from
hard luck fishermen to millionaire vacationers - some of the
tales were based on truth, some on fiction.

Georgia coast to area now as

The beginning for the city occurred in the period following

cabin in 1867. Other settlers soon followed.
Several names have been attached to the city over the years.

First came Brooks Landing and later Brooksville, names
associated with the Brooks family. These names were followed
by Camp Walton. Fort Walton and, finally, Fort Walton Beach.
The name " Walton" came from Colonel George Walton who was
secretary of West Florida during the governoship of Andrew
Jackson, 1821- 22 and secretary of the East- West Florida
territory 1822- 26. Walton was son of George Walton, singner
of the Declaration of Independence and Governor of Georgia. A
small known Walton Guards" encamped the area.

By 1884 the population of the area required establishment of

a small school house. In 1902 the first hotel, the Brooks
House, was built along the sound. The first post office was
built in 1906. Mail and supplies were transported by boat
from Pensacola.
In 1933, airport was developed on 137 acres of land for
an
use as a bombing and gunnery range by the military at Maxwell
Field, Montgomery, Alabama, and was designated " Eglin Field".
A municiplaity was created by Ch. 18539 of the Florida
Legislature in 1937. However, the city was not formed until
1941 when the
Legislature passed Ch. 21247. officially naming
the municipality the " Town of Fort Walton". There was a total
population of 91 people and the area included little more
than property on both sides of what is now U. S. Highway 98 in
the city.
Establishment of Eglin Air Force Base. construction of
several facilities such as Florosa
visitor Inn, Gulfview
Hotel. Indianola Inn, The Miramar Inn. and building of roads
and bridges greatly enhanced the area' s growth.
In order to take advantage of its Gulf of Mexico location and
to enhance visitor business, the name of the city was changed
to Fort Walton Beach in 1953.
