A RESQLUTION RECOGNIZING
THE PUBLIC NEED FOR
FLOOD INSURANCE AND AUTHORIZING THE CITY OF
FORT WALTON BEACH, FLORIDA, TO TAKE WHATEVER
ACTION_ IT DEEMS NECESSARY TO COMPLY WITH FLOOD
INSURANCE ' PROGRAM, PROVIDING THE EFFECTIVE DATE
HEREOF.
WHE~ AS, the City of Fort Walton Beach is a legally
constituted body which was duly created by the Florida State
Legislature, Chapters 18539, 21247, 24529, 29092, and 29093
Special Acts, and
WHEREAS, the City of Fort Walton Beach is authorized
by Chapters 69- 33, 69- 139, and 69- 234 of the Florida Statutes
to effect flood control measures, and
WHEREAS, the City of Fort Walton Beach recognizes the
immediate need for Flood Insurance for protection of the public,
and, hereby desires participation in the Flood Insurance Program,'
and'
WHEREAS, the City of Fort Walton Beach hereby agrees
to take such official action as may be necessary to comply with
the requirements of the Flood Insurance Program, and
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Fort Walton
Beach, 'recognizes that many propertie"s within its city limits
are subject to coastal flooding and flood damage in the follow- ...
ing areas:
1) between Highway 98 and Santa Rosa Sound from the
western City Limits to Brooks Bridge,
2) between Brooks Street and Choctawhatchee Bay
from Brooks Bridge to Bay Drive,
3) between Bay Drive and Choctawhatchee Bay from
Brooks Street to Ferry Road,
4) between Yacht Club Drive and Cinco Bayou to the
west City Limits on both sides of this bayou~ and

WHEREAS, through City Ordinance No. 100, as amended,
the formal adoption by council of the Southern Standard Building
Code, the Southern Standard Housing Code, the City maintains
considerable restrictions and codes designed to ' minimize flood
hazards, and
WHEREAS, the City of Fort Walton Beach will implement
further measures determined as to
necessary recognize and
evaluate flood hazards and further land
measures relating to
use in flood plain areas,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF FORT WALTON BEACH, FLORIDA:
1. That , it will recognize and evalute flood hazards
in all actions relating to land use in the flood plain areas
of the properties under jurisdiction of the City.
2. That it will 'enact by December 31, 1971, and
maintain in force adequate land use and control measures with
effective enforcement provisions consistent with the National
Flood Insurance Program criteria.
3. . That it will cooperate with neighboring jurisdictions
with respect to adjoining ~ rainage areas and flood plains in
order to prevent the aggravation of the floo~ing problem, and
will work with appropriate State and Federal agencies and bodies
in every way possible in complying with the Flood Insurance
Program.
4. That the City hereby appoints the City Manager of
the City of Fort Walton Beach the official with
as the1responsi-
bility, authority and means to implement the commitments made
herein.
5. That this Resolution shall become effective
immediately upon its passage and. approval by the Mayor.
