III For the recommended upgrades to the City' s WWTP, it is proposed that the primary clarifiers
will be decommissioned, and the raw wastewater will be diverted to the new oxidation ditch. In
II an oxidation ditch system, the raw wastewater and MLSS is conveyed around an oval concrete
structure using radial low- speed mechanical aerators. The MLE process was selected for its ease
I of operation, lower maintenance costs, successful track record, ability to meet more stringent
future pennit requirements, and its ability to control nitrates through variation of the internal
recycle.
I
The MLE system will consists of vertically mounted, low speed surface aerators in an oxidation
I ditch with partitions used to establish a continuous channel. A flow velocity sufficient to
maintain the suspension of mixed liquor in the channels is achieved by the pumping action of the
I aerators. The pumping action is created by lining up the aerators with the partition wall in a
manner such that the aerator pumps mixed liquor from the upstream channel into the aeration
I zone where it is completely mixed and forced into the downstream channel.
Wastewater and return activated sludge enter the anoxic section the MLE system where it is
I mixed with return activated sludge and internal mixed liquor recycle. This
