2.3.2. 1 Screening and Pretreatment
Wastewater is pumped from collection system Pump Stations # 1 and # 2 located
offsite and enters the City's WWTP through a 30- inch diameter force main that
discharges into a 3- foot wide common channel at the aerated grit chamber. Prior to
I entering the aerated grit chamber, the influent passes through a mechanically cleaned
bar screen manufactured by Parkson™. Solids screened- out by the bar screen are
I stored in an on- site dumpster adjacent to the pre- aeration basin and disposed at the
pennitted off-site Springhill Landfill in Jackson County. Based on discussions with
I WWTP staff, the screen operates properly and is in good condition. However, due to
the City' s use of comminutors in the City' s collection system, the majority of the
I influent has been ground or shredded to very fine material prior to reaching the
WWTP. As a result, some of the fine particles can pass through the screen. Figure 2-
II 4 shows photographs of the existing bar screen.
Solids ( grit) from the 5850 cubic foot aerated grit chamber are directed to a grit
Ii cyclone and screw classifier. Dewatered grit is stored in an on- site dumpster and then
removed and disposed of at the Springhill Landfill in Jackson County. WWTP staff
Ii.- have experienced significant clogging in the grit feed line to the cyclone and
classifier. In addition, the epoxy coated support structure of the grit cyclone is
ill
severely corroded. Figure 2- 5 provides photographs ofthe grit cyclone and classifier.

From the aerated grit chamber, the wastewater flows to a 17, 400 cubic foot pre-
ill
aeration basin. Aeration is provided from two ( 2) adjacent blowers through diffusers
