STATEMENT OF ISSUE: The Georgia Baptist Mission Board is requesting the use of the
beach area at The Boardwalk for a volleyball tournament.
BACKGROUND: County Ordinance #13-07 (regulation of county recreational areas, including
parks and beaches) addresses Special Events at county parks, beaches or recreational areas
within Okaloosa County.
A request has been received from Brian Bone with the Georgia Baptist Mission Board for use of
the beach area at The Boardwalk for a Beach Volleyball Tournament. Each summer the Georgia
Baptist Mission Board hosts a two week summer camp program for teenagers at the Emerald
Coast Conference Center. During the summer camp they would like to have a volleyball
tournament for the camp attendees each week. The event will be held Tuesday, June 14 and
Tuesday, June 21, 2016. They will use the existing volleyball courts at the Boardwalk.
Approximately 150 people are expected to attend the first week and up to 300 people the second
week.
This request has been reviewed by Public Safety, the Sheriff's Office, Okaloosa Island Fire
Department and the leaseholder. Insurance requirements have been met. Permit fees are waived
due to non-profit status. This permit request is being processed after-the-fact as it was received
after the cut-off for agenda items for the previous BCC meeting.
OPTIONS: Approve / Disapprove the request for a Special Event Permit to utilize the County
beach at The Boardwalk as submitted by the Georgia Baptist Mission Board for a camp
volleyball tournament.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Approve the request for a Special Event Permit to utilize the County
beach at The Boardwalk as submitted by the Georgia Baptist Mission Board for a camp
volleyball tournament. This is an after-the-fact permit request.
