Board is extremely beneficial to both entities and will allow full future expansion of our program to many other fire control districts once success has been established. Ie Combined numbers of students who will be reached by all three of our programs will average 1, 600 peryear and 8, 000 over a five- year period. The positive impact this will have on our community is immeasurable in terms of the affected households' fire safety ethics. Why this project cannot be funded sole through local funding The Fort Walton Beach Fire Department provides a full line of service to just a little more than 20, 000 residents and the residents and visitors in this area. In addition to providing fire suppression, fire prevention, public education, plans review and advanced life support ( ALS) first response service, our members participate on bike- medic, hazardous materials, special rescue, wildland fire and National Disaster Medical Service DMAT teams. This is a lot of services for a small department and a small city to provide. Because of the small tax base, the fire department's budget is only able to maintain the current equipment. Replacing old or substandard equipment, especially big- ticket items such as vehicles, is very difficult, if not almost impossible, under the current budget. We will be replacing a fifteen year old engine this year and will be paying for it for the next four years. The department has a very strong desire to support fire prevention efforts through the school curricula programs. However, the immediate priorities continue to play havoc with the common sense approach to fire protection. This, unfortunately, continues to lower its commitment to fire prevention and public education. Please describe any grants that you currently have with DHS including the AFG, for example, 2002 AFG grant for vehicle or 2003 ODP grant for exercises.
