Mr. Brock said, I am not a politician in the first place. I signed the letter and I will sign another one if it comes along. I was in the minority for a long time. I worked for $ 21. 50 a week for a long time, but I didn' t spend my time marching up and down the street. If you would go to work instead of marching you would be better off. REQUESTS FROM GYMNASTICS Mayor recognized Anita Norviel, repre- TEAM senting the gymnastics team. They made the following requests to Council: 1. Recognition and establishment of a Fort Walton Beach Competing Gymnastics Team. 2. Permission to join the Southeastern Gymnastics Conference 3. Students need more gym time for extra practice. 4. Need place for equipment be I a to set up on a permanent basis. 5. More money for the coaches. 6. Would like to form a booster club. Mr. Baughman moved that the requests be referred to the recreation director and a member of council for study and a report be made back to council in two weeks~ C"'~._ 6iI r '" , I'" ~ T-""~'~"-"-'-"- m---"'_"~_"~__""~~ 1/;3/ 7(P 192 Motion was seconded and carried unani- mously. BICENTENNIAL HEAD START DAY Mayor recognized a representative from Head Start, who asked permission to use the Chester Pruitt Community Center on l" f May 22 for a Bicentennial Head Start j! t Day. Mr. Rigdon moved that the request I be approved. Motion was seconded by Mr. Hill and carried unanimously. j REVEREND TURNER-- NAACP Mr. Rigdon said that since his name was brought up in the conversation, he thought it only fair that he have an opportunity to speak. I work for the government and I Reverend Turner. cannot debate I have been employee foran thirty years. I probably know more about the situation than he does. The only thing that bugs me is that I have worked with the commun- ity down there. I was the first man who led the fight to build houses in the low rental area, and to provide air condition- ing in the Pruitt School. I wish I could go into detail, but I can' t. I can' t debate Mr. Turner and I can' t really defend myself because I am a federal employee. I don' t like the comments segregating me and Mr. Hill. I think they took advantage of us. I signed the letter and I don' t apologize for signing it. I am sorry he feels this way. Mr. Hill stated that he was not even aware that this letter was being cranked up. Mr. Baughman stated that I think that what we have all forgotten to say is that we are all putting our country on the defense, ahead of our own self- ish interests. This base is one of the most important bases in the defense of the United States. I don' t believe this . turmoil is important enough to damage the . J. . 0.'..... welfare and interest of this ease. There are other ways of doing this than dis- turbing our national defense. Mr. said that he would like to Palmer say what Mr. Rigdon said. amen to I think Mr. Hill has done more to bring harmony in this area than anyone else. I work with 55 people, 35 of whom are black. My black workers make as much 3/ 7~-- 193 or more than my whites. I feel it is a disservice to the community to try to stir up something when there is really nothing to stir up. You have people you can go through to correct these problems.
