BICYCLE TRAIL COMMITTEE Mr. Baughman presented the following
RECOMMENDATIONS recommendations from the Bicycle Trail
Committee:
123
1. Recommend that Council consider an
immediate budget study to determine if
we go ahead and build approximately
can' t
one- fourth ( 1/ 4) mile bike trail on
Mooney Road within the next two months.
Committee discussed the possibility of
I asking the County to build sidewalk on
the opposite side of Mooney Road.
2. Recommend that West Florida Regional
Planning Council be authorized to submit
an application for federal funds for
bikeways - a joint city- county applica-
tion. ( Applications must include urban-
ized units of 50, 000 or more population.)
Mr. Baughman stated that this stretch of
Mooney Road is very dangerous to a lot of
school children who walk to school. We
feel this Council ought to do something
now rather than waiting for federal funds.
I think we can afford to do it. I think
the estimate a year or so ago was $ 15, 000
per mile. Mr. Walker says that for this
particular stretch, it would cost some-
what more than that.
City Manager explained that he had done
a little more checking since the Bicycle
Committee meeting. If you go through
the City budget you can do whatever you
want, but what the State is calling a
bicycle path is a striped area on the side
of the street with signs saying bicycle
path.
Mr. Brock said that the State won' t build
a path, and they won' t furnish money to
build a path, they will only put up signs.
City Manager said that you can handle this
through the City budget in any manner
that you wish, but the state definition
of a bicycle path is signs.

with some 200 cities.
You are competing
I feel the same
of
way as Mr. Baughman about Mooney Road.
I am in favor of finding some money to
correct that particular area. We have
asked the county for their support and
they don' t have the money. However, Mr.
