From 1848 to 1880, the Oneida Community lived together in
harmony from early austerity to gratifying prosperity. With the agin;
of their leader and the rise of a new generation, they agreed that thee
religious and social experiment should come to an end. In accordance ’
with their custom, the matter was studied and voted upon by the entire
community. The old Community was dissolved and its assets were
formed into a joint stock company. The new organization was called
Oneida Community Ltd., later changed to Oneida Ltd.
From the outside, the Mansion House looks very much as it
once did. Inside, many of the old public rooms have been preserved
as nearly as possible. The Big Hall, the Outer Library, the Upper
Sitting Room, the Court and the Nursery Kitchen are reminders of a
way of life a hundred years ago. In 1987, the Mansion House, in an
agreement with Oneida Ltd., was deeded to Oneida Community
Mansion House, a not-for-profit corporation.
