DATE: September 17, 2013
TO: Honorable Chairman and Members of the Board
FROM: Don Vanderhoek
SUBJECT: Okaloosa County Sheriff's Department VoIP System
DEPARTMENT: Information Systems
BCC DISTRICT: All
STATEMENT OF ISSUE: The Board is requested to approve funding for the Okaloosa
County Sheriff’s Department to become part of the BCC Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP)
network. This project will result in savings of approximately $42,000 per year.
BACKGROUND: The Board has previously approved funding for Constitutional Offices, the
State Attorney, Public Defender and Judiciary in order to join the Okaloosa VoIP network.
These implementations have all been successful and continue to save thousands of dollars
annually.
Various improvements to the Wide Area Network (WAN) and Local Area Network (LAN) will
be necessary, as well as the purchase of IP based phones and hardware. The estimated total cost
breakdown is as follows:
WAN Cost $ 10,000 Includes modifications at several
locations and new fiber near the Sheriff’s
administration building
LAN Cost $ 15,000 Includes new networks drops at
some locations while adapting existing
wiring at other sites
IP phones $ 53,000 Approximately 240 new IP based
phones
Hardware $ 60,000 New enhanced switches, switches,
lasers, copper
and fiber optic jumpers
Total $138,000
It is proposed that $138,000 be funded to the extent possible from the General Fund
Communications account 0114-541010 with the remaining balance to be funded from reserves.
OPTIONS: Approve or disapprove funding for the Sheriff’s Department to join the BCC VoIP
Network.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Request Board approval for funding in the amount of $138,000,
which will enable the Sheriff’s Department to join the BCC VoIP Network.
