Public Content
In preparing the Restore Act grants, we came across a potential $1,500,000.00 Dept of Defense Grant
for Special Needs students. On the surface, the District meets the eligible criteria. The deadline,
however, for application is May 5th.
Melody Summer and I will be working on this grant to meet the deadline. We will have more
rd
information for the April 23 board workshop.
Some of the key information from the roughly 50 page application package:
Definition of Military Dependent Student:
The term, military dependent student, is defined as an elementary or secondary school student who is
(i) a dependent of a member of the Armed Forces; (ii) a dependent of a civilian employee of the
Department of Defense; or (iii) a dependent of a person who is not a member of the Armed Forces or a
civilian employee of the Department of Defense but who is employed on Federal property.
The DoDEA Grant opportunity has two competitive areas of focus:
1. Focus Area #1: Academic support for military dependent youth (page 4)
2. Focus Area #2: Support for military dependent students' social-emotional wellbeing.
The ESE Director may have identified some trends and issues in the following areas that would benefit
programs by additional funding, staffing or professional development to support military dependent
students with disabilities. These supports may increase educator capacity and student achievement for
the typical population, as well as the military subgroup students.
Here are some options to consider for a potential grant award:
1. Literacy:
• Provide resources for evidence-based reading programs and strategies to increase achievement
for students with disabilities to supplement the traditional reading curriculum that the district
uses for typical students.
• Provide professional development and supervision of fidelity of implementation for selected
programs/strategies.
2. Challenging Behaviors:
• Hire a behavioral specialist to address the needs of students with challenging behaviors, such as
ADHD, autism or emotional impairments.
• Specialist will provide professional development for general and special educators who teach
students with challenging behaviors
3. Paraprofessionals:
• Provide additional staffing for paraprofessionals to support students with disabilities.
• Provide professional development to increase effectiveness of paraprofessionals currently
working with the system.
• Provide staff development to general and special educators to better direct the work of
paraprofessionals, including increased capacity for co-teaching and inclusive practices.
4. District Exceptional Family Member Program Liaison:
• Hire a professional for the district to facilitate transition of new military families with students
with disabilities and to troubleshoot issues with military families already in the district.
• Provide military cultural competency
