MAYOR/COUNCIL ANNOUNCEMENTS
Dr. Pullen thanked Staff for the quick response to his
request for information on an item.
Mr. Minich discussed an editorial that appeared in the Dailv News, as well as an article
regarding
the proposed bridge that was published in the MainStreet Gazette.
The Mayor discussed the plan by General Riemer of Eglin to work with the
county and Eglin on
initiatives including the BRAC, and a base and summit at the end of
community May. '
The Mayor also announced the Bridge Authority
meeting on March 9 at 2 pm regarding the bridge
corridor issue.
The Mayor stated he was asked if the City would prepare a resolution to the
County suggesting the
County put the bridge on a non- binding referendum, and he asked Council how they felt about a
resolution being prepared.
Mr. Tucker moved that the Mayor prepare a resolution to the
County asking them to place
the bridge issue on the ballot as a non- binding referendum. Dr. Pullen seconded motion.
Mr. Minich stated his thoughts that the Bridge
Authority does not answer to the City or the County
and preparing a resolution would be a waste of time, plus the fact that the Governor has a hot- line
for public input.
Mr. Tucker stated he feels the people should have the
right to vote on issues that will affect their
lives and homes.
Gene Armbruster, 210 Hudson Drive, asked that the resolution
clarify that a toll bridge is not
desired by the citizens and that be a part of the referendum.
Discussion included what wording the resolution should contain to make the
City's request clear to
the County, such as whether the City is referring to the
proposed bridge, the replacement of Brooks
Bridge, or a toll bridge.
Mr. Tucker amended his motion to have the
City Manager prepare the resolution with
wording referencing bridge considerations, including the proposed bridge, the replacement
of Brooks bridge, and a toll bridge, and
bring it back to Council for their consideration at
the next Council meeting. Dr. Pullen accepted the amendment.
The Mayor called for the vote on the amendment and it carried
unanimously with Holmes,
Patterson, Campbell, Tucker, Pullen, Hartwell, and Minich in favor.
