Box 15309 Clearwater, FL. 33766 1 CITY COUNCIL MEETING August 28, 2007 Consent Agenda Consideration of a request to submit the 2007 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant direct award for acceptance Police Chief) Council Action 1st 2nd Vote: Agenda Item Number: 4 CSM- Fort Walton Police Department INTER-DEPARTMENTAL MEMORANDUM Office of the Chief of Pollee To Joyce Shanahan City Manager From Ted Litschauer Chief of Police 1 Date August 17, 2007 Subject 2007 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant BACKGROUND: The United States Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs, Bureau of Justice Assistance, has made a direct award of the 2007 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant to the City of Fort Walton Beach Police Department. The amount of the grant is $ 10,407. DISCUSSION: Staff proposes to use the funds to enhance the Police Department Street Crimes Unit. The Street Crimes Unit has an ongoing effort to target street level crime, primarily narcotics and controlled substances. Several search warrant investigations will be planned and executed by the unit during the grant period. The proposed 2007 Edward Byrne expenditures will be to purchase a high power video link and a long range video link system, color and black and white cameras, and a covert body wire system. Equipment currently in use by the unit is old, outdated and non- working. Many of these items are sophisticated and expensive. The addition of new equipment, and the replacement of the older, unusable items, will enhance the operations of the Street Crimes Unit. Since the grant is being received mid fiscal year, the budget will need to be amended, at a future date, to account for this grant. Programmatic activity will commence in October, 2007. J.. CIJ- t. f RECOMMENDATIONS: Staff respectfully requests that City Council approve the proposed Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant expenditures as recommended by the Police Department. d~ tJ2 htJ ~/ JtJ 7 Ted Litschauer, Chief of Police I / Date TUtc Reviewed and concurred: Hold for discussion: Denied: v3 -01 Date Comments: JAG Direct Mem of Request 2007) I APPLICATION FOR 2.
