Founded and incorporated as a not for profit organization in 1984, the Foundation exists solely to support the very important Armament Museum mission. In 1985 the Foundation raised monies and constructed the present museum facility located just outside the main gate of Eglin Air Force Base. The museum is quite popular with more than 100, 000 visitors each year. In fact it is the area' s most visited singular attraction outside of the Emerald Coast' s beautiful beaches. The museum serves as host for many important events each year including the annual Emerald Coast Car Show and the Purple Heart Memorial ceremony. Additionally, many military organizations and personnel, and DoD civilians use the museum for official purposes including promotion ceremonies, retirements, changes of command and commemorative type events. The museum' s central location allowing public access, all weather accommodation and historical setting are notable factors. The Foundation' s current capital campaign is to construct a $ 1. 6m state of the art Education Center. The new Center will be built immediately adjacent to the current museum. Once constructed, the new Center will be gifted to the Air Force. The Center will ( 1) fully meet the professional education needs of Eglin' s Air Armament Center, it will ( 2) be made available to the local community for educational use and it will ( 3) better accommodate the Foundation' s innovative and expanding Engineers for America ( EFA) Program ( see enclosed tri fold for an overview). Concerning fund raising for our $ 1. 6m capital campaign, the Foundation has $ 1. 1 million on hand. Building plans for the new Center have been approved by Eglin Air Force Base officials and the Foundation can begin construction quickly once funds sufficiency is reached. The Foundation' s concurrent education initiative, Engineers for America, is impressive. This is a formal educational program, designed, developed and implemented in partnership with the award winning Okaloosa County School District. The program involves bringing elementary and middle school students to the museum for an informative tour of exhibits. The students then conduct experiments ( called " sorties ") to both enhance student skills and to promote student interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics ( STEM). The program is designed to motivate more students into technical careers to meet the critical shortage of engineers, scientists, and mathematicians the country faces in the future. The Foundation' s web site at www. afarmamentmuseum. com provides program background and a five minute video of an actual EFA school visit. EFA is in its fifth year of operation and it is growing. More than 3, 000 students from both More than 100 elementary and middle schools have already participated in the program. teachers have been certified as program instructors. A mobile STEM unit purchased with grant monies already received is providing for program outreach.
