PROJECT NARRATIVE ( cont.)
D. PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
We selected item nine, replacement of street lighting with energy efficient lighting technologies. The map
on the following page shows the network of City street lights by type, owned and operated by Gulf Power
Co. We chose a primarily residential area with relatively low traffic volumes comprised of well established
neighborhoods as the project site ( see map shaded area). The project site contains 1, 000 10OW high -
pressure sodium cobrahead street lights attached to poles. The map also shows the location of each
gymnasium in the city proposed for energy -efficient lighting retrofits. Street lighting has the added benefit
of being a highly visible project to tax payers. The new lighting will not only conserve energy, but will be
an enjoyable new lighting amenity for all in Fort Walton Beach. Recent studies have indicated that the
white light produced by LED street lights provides a much more desirable environment than that produced
by traditional yellow street lights. Pedestrians that commented on street light conversions to LED's in their
neighborhood felt that the LED light was safer, brighter, and more uniform compared to the yellow HPS
lights. Providing a more pedestrian friendly environment promotes multi -modal options such as walking,
which reduces the use of motor vehicles and greenhouse gas emissions. LED street lights produce
additional ripple -effect energy and cost savings as well since they last 3 -5 times longer than traditional
street lights, maintenance and associated driving is reduced. LED's have other environmental benefits as
well including reduced light pollution and contain no hazardous substances to dispose of such as
mercury.
Major tasks include:
Street light retrofit.
Gulf Power purchases LED street light fixtures.
City of Fort Walton Beach issues Task Order to consultant for technical project assistance and
energy and efficient conservation strategy development.
Gulf Power crews begin street light replacement.
Gym light retrofit:
City of Fort Walton Beach specifies and purchases T -5 florescent gymnasium light fixtures and
accessories.
City crews begin gym light replacement.
Green Local Government Designation:
ation:
