DOWNTOWN PEDESTRIAN SAFETY
This item has been placed on the agenda at the request of Councilman Griggs.
Mr. Griggs advised he placed this item on the agenda for discussion regarding the crosswalk
downtown in front of the Indian Temple Mound Museum. Mr. Griggs stated it is dangerous for
pedestrians to cross there and questioned whether a streetlight, blinking lights, or signage can be
placed there. Also discussed was permanently closing the crosswalk or adding traffic calming
devices to slow down the traffic.
Mr. Beedie reported there are on -going project improvements through the CRA being done, and
he can present these improvements at the next scheduled CRA meeting. Mr. Beedie also advised
that the City is awaiting final approval from the DOT on suggested improvements and that he
will contact DOT and relay to them the concern regarding the crosswalk.
Ellen Dickson, whose business, Unwind the Yard Shop, is located at 148 Miracle Strip Parkway
directly in front of the crosswalk, discussed the danger for customers of her store, including a
young mother with two children in a stroller who exited her store and almost got hit trying to
cross Highway 98. Ms. Dickson informed a homeless man was killed in front of her store, and if
a vehicle does slow down for pedestrians, they are often hit from behind from another vehicle
that does not slow down.
Mr. Beedie confirmed he will contact DOT and return with their response at the June 12 Council
meeting.
