Subject: Regatta Bay Linear Park Ordinance
Mr Boyles and Mr Kampert,
As a resident of Regatta Bay and a father of a child that attends Destin Middle School, my wife and I are
very much against the linear park and open container proposal that is before the commissioners. Please
consider this very carefully to the safety of our children that attend the Middle School. I am not in favor
of people who may be inebriate access to the school grounds or that may be near our children. There
are many children who walk or ride their bike to school from Regatta Bay that may be put in harm’s way.
Also, sports teams such as the cross country team and the golf team are usually pedestrians in this park
area proposal as well. Please do not be misled into believing that golf carts are not dangerous and that
it is ok to be driven when the possibility of excess drinking are combined. Most golf carts are designed
to go 14 mph. These are carts that are traditionally used on golf courses. Most golf carts for personal
use (including my own) can be easily modified to go 19 mph. Some golf carts that are customized can
travel up to 40 mph. At any of these speeds any child struck by a golf cart would certainly have an
undesirable effect.
Furthermore, who is to prevent these people carrying their open containers to be left out in the open
and not thrown away properly and could be consumed by these students.
Finally, I am not against have open containers in a controlled environment, such as on the beach. This
linear park proposal being right in front of a school can have no positive outcome except financial and
that should not override the safety of our children. To some, limiting the hours of this proposal to just
at night would solve these problems but there are many functions in the evening at the school
throughout the year, such as football games.
Please do not pass this ordinance. Thank you for your time.
