CITYOT TORTWALT05VBEAM
POLICE DEPARTMENT
STAFF REPORT MEMORANDUM
To: Joyce Shanahan, City Manager
From: Ted Litschauer, Police Chief
Date: September 11, 2008
Subject: Equipment via award
Background: The Fort Walton Beach Police Department has participated in the Florida
Law Enforcement Challenge for the past five years. While the department' s
participation and submission has always been professional and worthy of recognition,
this year the department was awarded first place. As a reward for winning first place,
the Fort Walton Beach Police Department received 12, 000 " points." These " points"
translate into " Champion Bucks." The Florida Department of Transportation posts a
brief display of available equipment and relative point values on a website. Winning
departments select equipment from the website, which FDOT then orders and pays for,
thereafter sending the selected items to the department receiving awards.
Discussion: In order for the Fort Walton Beach Police Department to receive
equipment using these " Champion Bucks," it must be authorized to do so by the City
Council. A detailed list of the equipment will be provided to Finance and Purchasing, for
asset recording, prior to placing it/them in service. A listing of the selected equipment is
attached hereto as an addendum.
Recommendation: I recommend that the City Council adopt a resolution authorizing
the police department to accept/receive equipment, which is selected, through this
program award.
Thank you.
