prevalent social problem because of the imbalance of power due to gender; and WHEREAS, the problems of domestic abuse are not confined to any one group of people, but affect people across all economic status, race and ethnicity, sexual orientation, culture and society, and are supported by societal indifference; and WHEREAS, the crime of domestic violence violates an individual' s privacy, dignity, security, and humanity, due to systematic use of physical, emotional, sexual, psychological and economic control; and WHEREAS, the impact of domestic violence is wide -ranging, directly affecting women, children, and society as a whole; and WHEREAS, it is battered women themselves who have been in the forefront of efforts to bring peace and equality to the home; and WHEREAS, Shelter House, Inc. has provided support, safety, and advocacy to victims of domestic violence for over 20 years. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mike Anderson, by virtue of the authority vested in me as Mayor of the City of Fort Walton Beach, do hereby proclaim the month of October 2008 as DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH and urge all citizens to actively participate in the scheduled activities and programs sponsored by Shelter House, Inc. to work toward the elimination of domestic violence. Walton Beach Dog Daze festival, established in 2000 as a community event to promote all aspects of responsible dog ownership and to provide an opportunity for all local dog groups to share their information and resources to the community; and WHEREAS, the Ft. Walton Beach Dog Daze festival, through the Greater Fort Walton Beach Chamber of Commerce, has teamed it' s event with the American Kennel Club' s Responsible Dog Ownership Day" program and through their programs which include AKC Canine Good Citizen testing, which certifies and rewards dogs with good manners at home and in the community, and the AKC Companion Animal Recovery, a database of more than 2 million pets who have been permanently identified with a tattoo or a microchip, as well as providing educational tool to the general public year round; and WHEREAS, the American Kennel Club has established their " AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Month" as September 2008, where they recognize any Responsible Dog Ownership based event throughout the month of September, to promote all aspects of Responsible Dog Ownership — safety around dogs for children, obedience training, spaying /neutering, licensing, leashing, exercise, veterinary care, etc, - all of which are essential to a happy and healthy bond between a dog, its family and their community; and WHEREAS, more than 400 AKC -affiliated clubs and other animal related organizations across the country have committed to educating the public about responsible dog ownership through local events and demonstrations because every dog deserves a responsible, educated and respectful owner /family. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Michael Anderson, Mayor of the City of Ft. Walton Beach, 27th, Florida, do hereby proclaim the last Saturday of September —September 2008 as FORT WALTON BEACH DOG DAZE & AKC RESPONSIBLE DOG OWNERSHIP WIN DAY in the City of Fort Walton Beach, because every dog deserves a responsible, educated, and respectful family.
