O O N r r L N N cu u C) N V O M i Z O a CITY COUNCIL MEETING January 22, 2008 Consent Agenda Consideration of a request to waive fees for Relay for Life Golf Tournament on March 8, 2008 City Manager) Council Action 1st 2nd Vote: Agenda Item Number: 5 CITY OF FORT WALTON BEACH, FLORIDA MEMORANDUM TO: Joyce Shanahan, City Manager FROM: Carole Jones, Executive Assistant SUBJECT: Waive Fee for Relay Golf Tournament DATE: January 15, 2008 Background For several years the City has sponsored a Golf Tournament to benefit the American Cancer Society. In May 2007 we sponsored a benefit tournament for a very sick Police Officer, for which the City Council graciously waived the tournament fees. We had scheduled a Relay tournament for October 2007, but decided to cancel it as another benefit tournament, this time for a very sick Deputy Sheriff' s Officer, was scheduled for the next day. At the time we cancelled, we reserved the date of March 8, 2008 to try again. Discussion The City has always been very supportive of the Relay for Life fundraising efforts, but over the past year in particular, the City has had to severely tighten the budget belt. It is precisely for this reason that the Relay Team is formally requesting Council' s support by waiving the fees for the Tournament on March 8, 2008. By not having to charge a rate to pay the fees, we are able to offer a cheaper registration amount, thereby attracting a greater range of players. The last Relay tournament attracted 144 people, being a completely full tournament. Should Council feel unable to provide this support this year, we will release our reservation to be utilized by another tournament. For your information, the player rate for charity tournaments is $ 30. 45 each, and for City co- sponsored events the rate is $ 21. 90 per player per the Comprehensive. Fee Schedule, dated 10/ 1/ 07). As last year, we plan to charge $ 30 per person for our " No Frills" tournament. Recommendation Staff respectfully requests the City Manager approach Council for this consideration.
