Acquiring the requested laptop computer would greatly enhance the department' s ability to provide for our firefighters' safety, ani
the safety of mutual aid personnel that also use the SEMS II personnel accountability system. Daily, our personnel respond to
emergencies that require the use of SCBA, full protective equipment, and an accountability system. The modern laptop technolo
combined with the SEMS II accountability system will greatly assist incident commanders and staff in tracking firefighters working
the scene of an emergency. Having an immediate electronic accountability system allows firefighters to provide aggressive often
operations, which provides for the greatest chance of saving the lives and property of our residents. The requested multi -gas

the need for evacuation and additional resources. The City of Fort Walton Beach contains areas of older neighborhoods where
abandoned underground natural gas tanks remain. It is not uncommon for the department to respond to reported leaks in these
abandoned tanks and the detectors will greatly enhance our department' s ability to determine the severity of the emergency. The
portable VHF radios would be used on a daily basis. These radios are essential in providing communication between dispatch,
incident commanders, and on scene personnel. As our current outdated and obsolete VHF radios continue to fail, there are no p

the greatest chance for firefighter safety and the protection of lives and property. The department' s current AEDs have been
removed from service. The requested AEDs would be available for all cardiac emergencies. The department responded to 992 F
emergency medical responses last year. Early defibrillation is proven to greatly increase the chances of survival for cardiac arre!
patients. These AEDs and the AED trainer would provide department personnel with the tools necessary to provide cardiac arre:
patients, whether residents or firefighters, a greatly increased chance of survival.

The department and the city continue to experience tremendous budget shortfalls. Changes in state law, falling property values,
last year's BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico have all served to lower the amount of available tax dollars for the funding of local fire
protection. There are no funds available in this or next year's fire department budget for these items. All items identified in this
request are not " nice to haves" but considered "essential" in providing adequate emergency services to our city residents and
surrounding areas.
