Commendation
Battalion Chief Gene Large
On the afternoon of April 7, 2005, red flags flew on the beaches ofOkaloosa Island, indicating a
high hazard" in the water. Shortly after 1 p. m., a man entered the water to swim and soon
encountered rip tides and rough water, and emergency personnel were called to assist in his
rescue. By the time Fort Walton Beach Engine 6 arrived on the scene, the swimmer and four
firefighters were in the water and in distress with only one rope and buoy among them. In trying
to assist, onlookers rapidly pulled in the rope and buoy, with only one firefighter holding on and
making it to shore. Fort Walton Beach Battalion Chief Gene Large quickly evaluated the scene
which included three firefighters and a swimmer in distress. Realizing that they had been in
rough waters for awhile and were tired, Battalion Chief Large decided to use exceptional means
in a water rescue and swim out with a rescue board due to the number of people in danger of
losing their lives. After the firefighters and swimmers grabbed the rescue board, Battalion Chief
Large, who was positioned in front of the board, executed instructions to them on when to kick
and when to rest based on the position of the waves, encouraging them to rest as the waves hit.
Fire Lieutenant Kevin Carvalho of the Okaloosa Island Fire District said in a letter to Fort
Walton Beach Fire Chief Mike Dutton that " Chief Large believed that he could make a
difference in the situation and provided desperately needed rescue equipment. He was a source
of positive encouragement, hope, and kept the rescuers focused and on task. We at this
department believe Gene Large is directly responsible for saving lives by entering the water at
his own peril."
It is my great pleasure to present this commendation plaque to Battalion Chief Large on behalf of
the City of Fort Walton Beach for his heroic efforts of April ih. Such actions make all of us
sitting up here extremely proud and grateful.
