BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS
AGENDA REQUEST
DATE: July 16, 2013
TO: Honorable Chairman and Members of the Board
FROM: Dino J. Villani
SUBJECT: School Bus Transportation Agreement Renewal
DEPARTMENT: Public Safety
BCC DISTRICT: ALL
STATEMENT OF ISSUE: Authorize Chairman to approve a renewal of an agreement between
the Okaloosa County Board of County Commissioners and the School Board of Okaloosa
County. The agreement establishes procedures for utilizing school buses for emergency
transportation. These buses are to be provided to the Board of County Commissioners before
and after a hurricane or other disaster.
BACKGROUND: Disaster response operations require the county to possibly provide
transportation to individuals to and from county shelters. Currently, the county provides
transportation to special needs residents without transportation to the special needs shelter. This
transportation is provided by Okaloosa Coordinated Transportation (OCT). OCT is limited to
the number of people they can transport due to the size of the OCT buses. The agreement with
the School Board will provide larger buses to the county, which will allow the county if needed
to transport larger numbers of individuals to county shelters. The renewal of a written agreement
with the School Board will also allow for possible reimbursement from the Federal Emergency
Management Agency.
OPTIONS: Approve/disapprove.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Authorize the Chairman to sign the transportation agreement
renewal.
