BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS
AGENDA REQUEST
DATE: June 18, 2013
TO: Honorable Chairman and Members of the Board
FROM: John Hofstad
SUBJECT: Naming of Picnic Pavilion at Leo Norred Park
DEPARTMENT: Public Works
BCC DISTRICT: 2
STATEMENT OF ISSUE: The Poquito Bayou Neighborhood Association in Shalimar has
requested that the picnic pavilion at Leo Norred Park be named the Mary Rush Pavilion, in honor
of Ms. Mary Rush.
BACKGROUND AND ANALYSIS: Ms. Mary Rush formed the Poquito Bayou
Neighborhood Association in 1996. She served as the Association President for several years,
leading to a membership of over 50% of the more than 400 neighborhood residents. Ms. Rush
was instrumental in the formation and dedication of the Leo Norred neighborhood park for use
by all residents as a gathering place for community events, especially events involving children
in the neighborhood.
Over the years, this park has been developed and maintained by the Poquito Bayou
Neighborhood Association. Many volunteer hours and donated funds by the Association have
reduced costs incurred by the County for the park. Ms. Rush has organized multiple events
annually for the neighborhood children with the event headquarters being the picnic pavillion at
the park.
This request has been unanimously approved by the Association's Board of Directors and
membership. Association members have donated sufficient funds to procure and erect a bronze
plaque to commemorate this recognition at no cost to the County. A Resolution has been
prepared to formally dedicate the naming of the picnic pavilion at Leo Norred Park.
OPTIONS: Approve/disapprove
RECOMMENDATION: Request approval of the Resolution naming the picnic pavilion at
Leo Norred Park, the Mary Rush Pavilion, in honor of Ms Mary Rush.
