School Siting and Collocation Okaloosa County has an objective related to school siting and collocation of schools with other public facilities. Okaloosa County in particular encourages the collocation of schools with parks, recreation and community facilities and also promotes schools serving as focal points within communities sites as close to urban residential areas as practical The following objective is found within the Future Land Use Element of this Comprehensive Plan: Policy 10. 18 Future public or private primary or secondary schools shall be an allowable use in all land use categories except the " industrial," " recreation," conservation" and " Okaloose Island" land use categories. Public or private primary or secondary schools shall be located in agricultural land use categories only when no feasible site exists in a non- agricultural category, or when necessary to serve student populations that are mainly located in agricultural areas. The County intends for future schools to be sited as closely to urban residential areas as practical, preferably within walking and/ or bicycle distance of the primary residential areas to be served. The County shall encourage the co- location of County public facilities, such as parks, libraries, and community centers, with schools to the extent possible. A School District representative sits on the County' s Technical Advisory Committee TRC) and on the Local Government Comprehensive Planning Committee. Through this coordination all applications for development approval are provided to the school district for review and comment. The primary means of coordination between the County and the School Board are School District representation of the TRC and conducting concurrency review meetings at the time the district is considering a site for a new school.
