Com news & information for the emerald coast EDITORIAL: BRAC puts Okaloosa in 7th heaven 2010 -01 -29 16 :38: 08 No doubt about it: Lt. Col. Gary Bloomberg, whose job right now is to help integrate the Army' s 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne) into Okaloosa County, is articulate and enthusiastic and brimming with information about the coming move. It helps that the news is good for both the county and the troops who make up the 7th, the legendary Green Berets. Interviewed last week by the Daily News' editorial board, Lt. Col. Bloomberg said 2,200 soldiers plus about 4,300 family members soon will move from Fort Bragg, N. C., to the Eglin Air Force Base area, fulfilling a Base Realignment and Closure objective. He said that will mean a roughly 25 percent increase in Eglin' s activeduty population. The troops will be an elite bunch — trained like pro athletes, educated to speak at least two languages, carrying top security clearances. They will buy homes and put their kids in school and be active in local civic groups. We' re going to add to the fabric of this community," he said. The community, in turn, is making its own preparations. Lt. Col. Bloomberg was especially pleased with plans for a BRAG- funded overpass across State Road 85 to link Duke Field and the 7th Special Forces Group' s new headquarters. The overpass will enable military equipment and personnel to cross SR 85 without tying up traffic. Our infrastructure requirements are being more than met," he said. The benefits of the bed -down should extend well beyond Okaloosa County. Lt. Col. Bloomberg said Army and Air Force personnel will work well together. "We will grow natural synergy," he said, and become a force multiplier" — a better fighting group — for the Department of Defense. The downside? Because of the dangerous, boots -on- the -ground kind of work they do, he said, the Green Berets have a higher casualty rate than an Air Force community may be accustomed to seeing. We hope time will prove him wrong on that but right about everything else. When we in Northwest Florida make new friends, we want to keep them. Welcome to the Emerald Coast, soldiers. Col. Gary Bloomberg starts A every meeting he has with 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne) families with the same question: " Who' s heard something crazy about Northwest Florida." As chief of the integration team charged with preparing the arrival of Eglin Air Force Base' s new tenants, Bloomberg has heard a lot of myths about Fort Bragg, N. C., and Northwest Florida. He shared a few of them recently when he talked with the Daily News' Editorial Board. He said he and his team were assigned to Okaloosa County last summer, two years before 7th Special Forces battalions start to arrive. He said local officials have asked whether they will need more jail space and police to handle the "rowdy" Army guys. On the Fort Bragg trips, he hears
