This building is currently, and has been, occupied by the Emerald Coast Science Center ( ECSC) previously FOCUS Center) since 1989. o Maximum valuation at $ 13. 00 per square foot could generate $ 77, 337 per year to the City. o The annual rent paid by the ECSC to the City, set by lease agreement 20 years ago, is $ 1000 per year o The remaining $ 76, 337 in potential annual lease revenue is surrendered by the City of Fort Walton Beach in indirect support of the Emerald Coast Science Center, a 501 C ( 3) Non Profit organization. The Emerald Coast Science Center is the only fully operational science museum in Northern Florida. If a line were drawn from Jacksonville, FL to Mobile AL, the ECSC would be the only science museum along and 20 miles either side of that line. And it' s on the Landing Park in Fort Walton Beach. The museum provides high quality science education programs to schools, not only in Okaloosa County, but across a large area of the Gulf Coast. Visitors came from Pensacola to Panama City. The majority came from the Destin/Miramar Beach area. o While there is no empirical data to support any speculation, it is quite possible that the ECSC is the biggest summertime draw to the Fort Walton Beach downtown area during the summertime vacation season. While the ECSC is fully capable, even during economic downturns like the current one, of supporting itself without any further assistance from City, County, State of Federal funds, it is limited in its ability to absorb additional
