These maps were prepared by the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, Mobile District. The last major hurricane to hit our area prior to the 1998 map was Hurricane Opal in 1995. Although I understand these maps were prepared after that horrific storm, they were based upon a coastline survey prior to Opal 1995. Since then, our coastline has seen the likes of Ivan, Dennis, and Katrina, as well as, many other unnamed tropical depressions and smaller storms. There is little doubt that the current geography on these maps has changed dramatically, especially after losing most of the protection offered by our barrier island. The City of Fort Walton Beach is formally requesting Okaloosa County bring these storm surge maps up to date so that both our Emergency Management Teams may produce evacuation plans, update our CEMPs, and do a better job in preparing our communities for future significant events. 11y, Mike Anderson Mayor CC: FWB City Council Okaloosa County Administrator C'.:> C) Q)~~~ 1r September 26, 2005 Honorable Chairman Bill Roberts Okaloosa County Board of Commissioners 1804 Lewis Turner Boulevard Fort Walton Beach, FL 32547 Dear Commissioner Roberts, The City of Fort Walton Beach is currently using the Northwest Florida Hurricane Storm Tide Atlas for the Jurisdiction of Okaloosa County dated May, 1998 for emergency planning purposes.
