however, are there any emergency shelters open on a regular basis, for anyone seeking a night' s rest. The Cold Night Shelter program, sponsored by First Presbyterian Church, St. Simon' s Episcopal Church, and the 7th Day Adventist Church, provides emergency shelter for Four anyone who ask whenever the temperature is predicted to hit 40 degrees or below. years ago, when the program first opened, the shelters opened 46 times, which is the program record. Last year the shelters were only open 28 times. The optimum capacity for each churchis 60 persons, although on nights such as Christmas Eve churches have crowded in as many as 80 persons. There have been nights when persons had to be turned away even in the bitterest weather, simply because there was no floor space available. The churches that provide cold night shelter also provide weekend meals. The numbers of homeless attending these meals has been double what it has been in years past. This is a good indication that the numbers of individuals and families seeking shelter from extreme weather is also going to be significantly greater than in years past. The Cold Shelter Coalition has been canvassing other churches for assistance since Night the moment First Presbyterian opened its doors for the first time. Churches have been Page 1 0 o Q willing to provide volunteers, but have shown extreme reluctance to offer their facilities. The Coalition has run out of options in the faith- based and non- profit sectors. Project Design: The Cold Night Shelter using the following operational schedule: Cold Night Shelter Coordinator sets up schedule for churches participating in the program, with various churches agreeing to one or more specific days of the week for shelter operation. ColdNight Shelter Coordinator tracks weather, maintains communication with Emergency Management Services at Okaloosa County.
