waiting for a call back from a professional trapper. IX: NEW BUSINESS: A. Okaloosa Island Image: President Hudson was disturbed by a Spout-Off in the newspaper suggesting that Destin put the new proposed strip club on Okaloosa Island “where it would fit better”. She wanted to know what we could do to better improve the image of Okaloosa Island. After all, no one would suggest putting a strip club on Holiday Isle or in south Walton. Other communities have catchy promotions, why not Okaloosa Island? Dave Miller thought that the County did not do enough in making the Island a more beautiful place and several of those present did not think that Island residents should be doing the work in the medians. Several voiced concerns that the amount of tax revenue taken off of Okaloosa Island did not fairly match the amount the County spends in maintaining the Island. Vince Bruner brought up the idea of having Packet Pg. 36 Okaloosa Island designated as a CRA community. (Community Re-Investment Act) Mr. Bruner felt that Okaloosa Island could qualify and could, once the designation was made, keep more of the tax revenue collected, for use on the Island. A CRA designation could possibly make Federal Grant money available. Per Vince Bruner, the County would still get the tax revenue they get today, but any additional revenue received due to the property values rising, would have to be spent on Okaloosa Island. In his opinion, this may be the only way to get “our fair share” of the tax revenues collected. Many of those present felt there were definitely inequities in what the County was ”spending” on Okaloosa Island and “collecting” on Okaloosa Island. Vince Bruner made the motion to request the Board of County Commissioners recognize Okaloosa Island as a CRA community. Kathy Foster seconded the motion. The motion was approved. B. Speaker in December: Ben Anderson has been invited to speak about taxes. C. New Logo: Desley Parker shared the new area logo. HOWARD CLERK OF CIRCUIT COURT Packet Pg. 62 PUBLIC HEALTH HERO – OKALOOSA COUNTY Written by: Sarah White, Public Information Officer Lizzie Mae (Liza) Jackson, 1888-1971 Lizzie Mae (Liza) Jackson is widely regarded as a pioneer in Fort Walton Beach. An early resident of the fishing village known then as Camp Walton, Jackson and her first husband, lumber businessman, W.B. Harbeson, began spending weekends and summers there in 1915. Although she was a world traveler, Jackson said she loved Okaloosa County, and became a prime figure in the area’s development. Jackson was an avid community organizer and actively involved in numerous civic groups. In 1921 she founded the Woman’s Club, which set into motion a variety of programs that had a lasting impact on the community. Conscious of health and welfare needs in the community, the Woman’s Club enforced sanitation in the butcher shops, worked to eradicate fleas, dog flies and mosquitos, and hired a town constable whose primary duty was to keep flea-ridden livestock off the streets. “For several years, the only law enforcement was administered by the women of the Woman’s Club,” stated Jackson in a 1959 article in Playground Daily News. The women paid special attention to the health of underprivileged children, furnishing crutches and braces for those who were disabled, and providing eye examinations and glasses for those with vision problems.
