CITY COUNCIL MEETING August 12, 2008 Consent Agenda Consideration of a request to approve the Mutual Aid Agreement between the City and Hurlburt Field Fire Emergency Services Flight, and authorize the Mayor and Fire Chief to sign on behalf of the City Fire Chief) Council Action 1st 2nd Vote: Agenda Item Number: 5 CITY OF FORT WALTON BEACH MEMORANDUM DATE: August 12, 2008 TO: Joyce Shanahan, City Manager FROM: Mike Dutton, Fire Chief SUBJECT: Agreement for Mutual Aid between the City of Fort Walton Beach and Hurlburt Field Fire Emergency Services Flight BACKGROUND: It is desired that there be a continuation of the relationship between the City of Fort Walton Beach Fire Department and Hurlburt Field Fire Emergency Services Flight. Several years have passed with this mutual aid system in place and both entities have benefited greatly insuring quick and immediate responses of fire and emergency services. DISCUSSION: It is indeed a mutual advantage and benefit to enter into this agreement for the following reasons. It not only insures optimum fire protection for the citizens of Fort Walton Beach; it also provides for a strong relationship between the City and the Hurlburt Field Fire Emergency Services Flight; it guarantees that the City will be in compliance with the two in/two out Federal requirement, although a small delay due to distance is possible; it provides for assurance that should City resources already be committed to a fire or other emergency a mutual aid partner will respond in their place. RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the City Council approve the AGREEMENT for MUTUAL AID BETWEEN HUBURT FIELD FIRE EMERGENCY SERVICES FLIGHT and authorize the Mayor and the Fire Chief to sign on behalf of the City of Fort Walton Beach.
