Dear Zan;
As you are aware, Okaloosa County has been cleaning the beaches since November of last year. These
services have been provided during the period of the year where there is limited use of the beaches by
our visitors. We are now about to have a substantial use of the beaches and the County does not have
the ability to clean the approximately 9 miles of beach on Okaloosa Island and in Destin. Further it does
not have the necessary equipment to adequately perform these services. This means there will be no
trash pickup and no beach raking at either of these locations.
As you may also be aware, Spring Break is imminent and begins in earnest on March 1* and upon its
arrival, the adverse impacts will grow. There is an immediate need to provide the necessary resources
to make certain that the beaches are adequately cleaned and maintained for our visitors. This is clearly
an emergency situation. Typically, at this time of year and moving into summer, over 40 tons of trash is
collected from our beaches each month. If the County does not continue the cleaning and trash pickup
on these beaches we run the risk of alienating our visitors with the likelihood that they will not return to
our beaches and that could result in great economic harm to the County.
Therefore, we respectfully request that beach cleaning services be immediately obtained through the
emergency procurement process.
if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely,
EK baler
