As Sheet 1 5/ 9/ 200810:59 AM CITY OF FORT WALTON BEACH COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT SERVICES DEPARTMENT MEMORANDUM Date: May 6, 2008 To: Joyce Shanahan, City Manager From: Missy McKim, CDS Direct SUBJECT: Fort Walton Beach Annexation Survey Results BACKGROUND: The City Council held a day -long strategic planning workshop on January 20, 2004. Its purpose was to determine the City's current and future priorities and to create shared commitments among City Council, City staff and the residents about the goals and strategies required to address these priorities. During the workshop, Council was presented with a list of discussion topics and was polled to establish discussion priorities, one of which was to offer Okaloosa Island residents an opportunity to annex and find out why they prefer to annex or to stay an unincorporated area of Okaloosa County. Staff mailed out a letter with an enclosed survey to all Santa Rosa Island property and kw business owners on July 2, 2004 requesting their input on whether they are in favor or not in favor of annexing with the City of Fort Walton Beach and why. In the letter the City requested the survey be returned by August 1, 2004. ANALYSIS: Overall 2,400 surveys were mailed out and 1, 022 were returned. Of the returned surveys 5% were in favor of annexing, 56% were not in favor of annexing and 39% requested more information. The comments received with the surveys are included in the results. In general, most of the residents/businesses that returned the survey, were concerned about increased tax implications. RECOMMENDATIONS: City Council review the results of the survey.
