after installation of the filtration systems.
The call volume for our two stations is upwards of 20 calls per day, so the filtration systems will be used multiple times every day.
These systems begin filtering immediately when the engine is started and continues for a preset time to allow for clearance of the
station. A manual activation switch is an additional feature, enabling us to filter our exhaust wherever we travel. This technology will
thus provide protection for our members as they perform daily vehicle checks and patients that often must be treated near an
operating apparatus.
Members of the community who enjoy regular visits to the firehouse will appreciate the cleaner air. The boy scouts, daycare groups
and school children will breathe easier when they come for a tour of the station and fire trucks. We will be able to educate these
young ones on fire prevention in a safe environment.
We plan to clean our engine bays from top to bottom to remove all contaminants left behind by diesel exhaust. From this point we
will have a fresh start to proceed in our mission of protecting life and property. This initiative will boost the morale of every brother
and sister firefighter, knowing that the 1/ 3 of our lives we spend here at the firehouse will be much improved. Our families will be
excited to hear that this cause of cancer, respiratory and heart problems has been eliminated. With the health concerns removed
from our minds we can focus on our duty of protecting the lives of the public we serve.

Various governmental agencies and health organizations link soot particles from diesel exhaust to cancer, respiratory problems and
heart disease. The National Fire Protection Association advocates " the need for the elimination and containment of all vehicle
exhaust emissions ". Industry standards and stern recommendations make it abundantly clear that this health hazard cannot be
allowed to continue.

The City of Fort Walton Beach Fire Department strives to meet or exceed national standards and will continue to do so with these

unresolved. Firefighters are looked up to by the community and we are determined to set a proper example in health and safety.
