STATEMENT OF ISSUE: Destin 50 Beach Ultra, Inc., has requested a special event permit
that would grant permission to utilize county beach area (James Lee Park) for a series of beach
runs on February 14th and 15th.
BACKGROUND AND ANALYSIS: County Ordinance #13-07 (regulation of county
recreational areas, including parks and beaches) addresses Special Events at county parks,
beaches or recreational areas within Okaloosa County.
A request has been received from Destin 50 Beach Ultra, Inc., to utilize the beach portion of
James Lee Park as part of the running course. A 5k fun run will take place Saturday, February 14
starting at 8:00 A.M. The 50 mile run will take place Sunday, February 15 between the hours of
8:00 A.M. and 7:00 P.M. with the James Lee Park portion taking place more in the middle of the
day. Between 100 and 200 participants are expected for these races.
In accordance with approved BCC policy, the Special Event fees have been waived due to the
non-profit status of Destin 50 Beach Ultra, Inc. All required documentation has been provided.
This request has been reviewed by Public Works, Public Safety, the Sheriff’s Office and the
leaseholder at James Lee Park.
OPTIONS: Approve / Disapprove
RECOMMENDATIONS: Staff recommends Board approval of the request for a Special Event
Permit as submitted by Destin 50 Beach Ultra, Inc.
