FISH AND WILDLIFE FOUNDATION GRANT
Consideration of approval of the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation Grant Agreement in the
amount of $100, 713 for the Lower Choctawhatchee Bay Coastal Conservation
program.
John Hofstad, Utilities Director, explained the City program ties in with the
City' s Water Quality
Initiative oyster gardening effort in the intercoastal waterway with a portion of the funds to be used
to fund a program manager and a lap top to start the program.
In response to the question on the hiring of a Program
Manager, the Utilities Director explained the
grant"program through the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the National Fish
and Wildlife Foundation was for an oyster
gardening program and there has to be a Program
Manager in place to manage the program. He said it is a full time jOb to manage the program, it
has to be done within the time frame which ends in April, and the
City does not have the manpower
to dedicate just to the program. ~
In response to the question on whether placards or
signs will be placed in the Sound Park to
educate the public how the program works, the Utilities Director stated a critical
component of
receiving the grant is to have an educational public outreach and part of the Program Manager' s
responsibility will be to develop lesson plans for the local schools, teach the program during the
grant duration, and to identify it at Sound Park once it is completed. He also confirmed the
program is part of an effort to clean up the sound.
