STATEMENT OF ISSUE: Staff will present the Board with an overview of the Fiber
OpticTelecommunications project.
BACKGROUND: Implementation of the Okaloosa County Fiber Optic project began in 2001.
The purpose of the project is to reduce the growing annual communication cost incurred by local
governments while providing for an avenue of growth as the technical needs for bandwidth
rapidly increase. Technology continues to be the primary mechanism leveraged by departments
to increase efficiency and lower the operation cost of local government. The Fiber Optic project
is a proactive measure taken by the Board that will curb communication cost and provide an
avenue of growth for future uses of technology.
