BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS AGENDA REQUEST DATE: June 18, 2013 TO: Honorable Chairman and Members of the Board FROM: Daniel O'Byrne SUBJECT: TDC Membership Selection - June 2013 DEPARTMENT: Tourist Development Department BCC DISTRICT: All STATEMENT OF ISSUE: This request seeks Board approval to proceed with a selection process to fill a recently vacated seat on the Okaloosa County Tourist Development Council. BACKGROUND: In April 2013, the Board appointed six (6) non-elected members to serve on the Tourist Development Council. Due to unforeseen personal circumstances, Michael Bass, who was appointed to serve a two-year term as a Lodging Industry Owner/Operator, has tendered his resignation. Pursuant to Section A.500(4) of the Tourist Development Department Operations & Procedures Manual, vacancies on the Council are required to be filled in the same manner as the appointment of the person whose absence created the vacancy. The Board previously appointed a Selection Committee, comprised of Commissioner Kelly Windes, Dan O’Byrne and John Hofstad, to review thirteen (13) candidate applications and recommend qualified candidates to be appointed by the Board. The Selection Committee convened duly-noticed public meetings and recommended six (6) candidates to serve on the Council, which was subsequently approved by the Board. There remains five (5) qualified Lodging Industry Owner/Operator candidate applications from the initial selection process. At its May 30, 2013 meeting, the Okaloosa County Tourist Development Council recommended that the initial Selection Committee review the remaining five (5) candidate applications and recommend a qualified candidate to fill the vacant seat on the Council. At this time, the Board is requested to authorize the Selection Committee to contact the five (5) remaining Lodging Industry Owners/Operator candidates and determine whether they continue to be interested in serving on the Council. The applications of those candidates that remain interested in serving would then be reviewed by the Selection Committee and a recommendation would be made to the Board. OPTIONS: Approve/Disapprove RECOMMENDATIONS: Approve the recommended selection process as described above. RECOMMENDED BY: APPROVED BY: Ernie Padgett, County Administrator
