BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS
AGENDA REQUEST
DATE: June 17, 2014
TO: Honorable Chairman and Members of the Board
FROM: Don Turner
SUBJECT: OC Admin Building - Funding Release for Steel Package
DEPARTMENT: Facility Maintenance
BCC DISTRICT: All
STATEMENT OF ISSUE: Requests BCC approval of funding for the Steel Package for the new
Okaloosa County Administration Building.
BACKGROUND: The work to ready the former Shalimar Annex site for the construction of a
new 63,000 + s.f. building is moving along at a very quick pace. The asbestos abatement
activities are nearly complete and the demolition of the existing structures will begin very soon.
After the site work and building foundation are prepared, the building's structure will begin to go
vertical. To do that, the structural steel package needs to be on site and ready to erect.
Structural steel, like a number of other elements of a large building, must be ordered well in
advance of the day when it will be needed. These elements are in the critical path for the
completion of the project. The amount of funding requested (up to $1,500,000) for the steel is an
estimate. Steel is a commodity and the price will only be fixed when an order is placed.
The steel must be ordered right away to be on site when needed. Any delay in ordering or
receiving the steel may result in the building not being ready for occupancy prior to the
expiration of the Uptown Station lease.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Requests BCC approval of funding in an amount up to $1,500,000 for
the Steel Package for the new Okaloosa County Administration Building.
