BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS
AGENDA REQUEST
DATE: June 3, 2014
TO: Honorable Chairman and Members of the Board
FROM: Ed Schroeder
SUBJECT: Okaloosa Island Dune Walkover Construction - DEP Agreement14OK1
DEPARTMENT: Tourist Development Department
BCC DISTRICT: ALL
STATEMENT OF ISSUE:
Request approval of DEP Agreement 14OK1 for the construction of six dune walkovers on
Okaloosa Island for a total construction cost not to exceed $218,700.00.
Due to the availability of public access, this project is eligible for 50 percent State cost sharing.
As a result, the State and County will each contribute an amount not to exceed $109,350.00.
The County's share of the construction cost will be provided by the 1st percentage point of each
dollar of the Tourist Development Tax.
BACKGROUND:
Currently, there are six County-owned, beach access points on Okaloosa Island that are simple
paths cutting through the primary dune. This condition weakens the dune system promoting
increased erosion during storm events. The construction of these walkovers will alleviate this
condition by elevating pedestrian traffic above the dunes allowing the eroded areas of the dune to
recover over time.
Construction of the project will be conducted by the Okaloosa County Public Works Department
realizing a significant cost savings to the County and State.
The TDC recommended acceptance of DEP Agreement No. 14OK1 at its May 29 meeting.
OPTIONS: Approve/Disapprove
RECOMMENDATIONS:
Approve DEP Agreement 14OK1 and authorize the Chairman to sign the agreement and all future grant
documents during the term of the grant.
